The other elections

November 7, 2011 at 1:58 pm (News, Politics)

It’s been over a month since our last election, and hopefully it will be a few years before we have another provincial or federal campaign. But ballots will be cast across the country in various votes in the coming weeks and months. Here’s a few quick hits on elections I’m following.

  • A ninth person has jumped into the race to become leader of the federal NDP. Today Niki Ashton joined other MPs, including Paul Dewar and Peggy Nash, in vying for the job of head of the Official Opposition. I’m a little surprised to see so much interest, I thought there would be greater hesitation in running to replace the uber-popular Jack Layton. The vote will take place next March.
  • Saskatchewan residents are going to the polls today in a provincial election. Incumbent Premier Brad Wall is expected to win another term for his Saskatchewan Party, though the NDP also hopes to make significant gains.
  • Folks in North Glengarry will have to cast ballots for a fifth time in just over a year. Due to some procedural issues, the township council decided to hold a vote to find a new mayor to replace Grant Crack – now an MPP – rather than appoint deputy mayor Chris McDonell to the post as originally planned.
