Jack Layton dies

August 22, 2011 at 8:47 am (News, Politics) ()

NDP leader Jack Layton passed away early this morning. I’m a little bit in shock. He looked terrible when announcing his new battle with cancer, but I didn’t believe that war would end so swiftly. It’s only been four weeks since he took a leave of absence as head of the party.

What a huge blow, to not only the New Democratic Party across the country, but to Canadian politics in general. He led the NDP to their greatest showing in history in this spring’s federal election, and in the process became the leader of the Official Opposition. A great man, he will be greatly missed.

Here’s a statement released by this family this morning:

We deeply regret to inform you that The Honourable Jack Layton, leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, passed away at 4:45 am today, Monday August 22. He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and loved ones. Details of Mr. Layton’s funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.

Here’s another statement by interim leader Nycole Turmel:

Jack was a courageous man. It was his leadership that inspired me, and so many others, to run for office. We – Members of Parliament, New Democrats and Canadians – need to pull together now and carry on his fight to make this country a better place.

And here’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper‘s comments:

On behalf of all Canadians, I salute Jack’s contribution to public life, a contribution that will be sorely missed.

I know one thing: Jack gave his fight against cancer everything he had. Indeed, Jack never backed down from any fight.

Here’s a collection of Twitter tributes for Jack Layton.

Layton wrote a letter to Canada on the day before he died. Until the end, he was thinking of the greater good for his country:

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.
