Jack Layton vs. cancer

July 25, 2011 at 3:28 pm (News, Politics) ()

NDP leader Jack Layton announced today that cancer has hit him once again, hard enough that he is temporarily stepping down as leader of the opposition. The NDP caucus chair will probably fill in as party head over the summer, and Layton says he hopes to be back at work by the time Parliament resumes in September.

I hope so, too.

While I may not agree with all of the NDP’s policies, I have a huge amount of respect for Jack. He has made enormous contributions to Canadian politics. Watching the press conference today was rather depressing – he looked gaunt and generally unhealthy, his voice was hoarse. It didn’t even sound like him. It’s sad to see him in such a state, especially in contrast to his incredible performance in May’s election less than four months ago.

That’s for sure. The NDP, in my humble opinion, wouldn’t have had much of a showing last time without him. Our prayers and hopes will be for a speedy recovery. Our country needs leaders in every political shape, especially one of his calibre.
