Election 41: day 21

April 15, 2011 at 9:57 am (Election 2011, Politics) (, , )

Two down, three to go.

I’ve now covered events with two of the national party leaders. Elizabeth May made a quick stop in Cornwall last week, and last night Michael Ignatieff rallied Liberal supporters in St. Isidore. I know, it’s not a normal destination for Standard-Freeholder reporters, but the Glengarry-Prescott-Russell riding does overlap our coverage area.

Ignatieff and the local candidate flipped burgers, chatted with local firefighters, posed for pictures and shook hands. It took three buses to deliver the politician, his wife, his staff and the media swarm. I like a little competition once in a while, as the photographers vie for the best angle and accidentally step on each other’s toes.
After about an hour, they disappeared back into their vehicles and took off for their next campaign stop – taking their wireless internet network with them. As I headed home, I passed Ignatieff’s bus pulled over to the side of the road near the Hwy. 417 on-ramp, with his security vehicles behind him.

On the national level, discussion today is around the “ethnic costumes” controversy, a special ballot box, and – somehow – Helena Guergis has made a comeback into the media spotlight.
