Election 2011

March 22, 2011 at 8:57 pm (News, Politics) (, , , , )

The federal budget has been tabled. The finance minister has touted his measures that will help the economy. The opposition parties have expressed their utter disdain.

This has happened before.

But an election is looking like the most likely possibility at this point. All three parties opposite the Conservatives have laid out their plan to vote against the budget, topple the government and force a vote.

I’m kind of a nerd in that I get some sort of adrenaline rush covering these kinds of stories. The frantic calls for comments, the pouring over numbers and details, the speculation.

I won’t get into specifics of the budget, but I’m pretty sure the Liberals and Bloc wouldn’t have supported it no matter what was in it. The NDP may have been won over if the Conservatives gave them a little more than what they wanted. But so much of this is election posturing and name-calling. The campaign began long ago. Everyone jostling for the limelight, the perspective, the attack ads. None of it surprises me much anymore.

Sure, call an election. But I think it’s dumb to have it over a budget that targets the deficit and offers small initiatives on a variety of important issues. Why not call it over the ethical scandals hitting the Conservatives lately? Oh, because Canadians don’t care? That’s probably true, and it annoys the crap out of me. They should.

The budget is important. It sets out the government’s plan for the year, their priorities, how tax dollars will be spent. Opposition parties should let the ruling party have that. They were elected, albeit in a minority. Instead, they should call an election over transparency,  trustworthiness, accountability.

It’s going to be an interesting year.

It would’ve been awesome in the text “ethical scandals” in this post were hyperlinked to something…

Al Jazeera doesn’t report much on Canadian politics. I don’t get the newspaper or have cable TV. Believe it or not, Cheryl…a few blogs I read (like this one) are my only Canadian news sources. That and CBC Ottawa News feed on iGoogle.

    Please don’t hate me…
