Abortion funding

February 19, 2011 at 9:49 pm (News, Politics) (, )

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted to eliminate all funding for Planned Parenthood, plus a larger budget that covers prenatal care, treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and other services. They are desperate to save some cash – rightfully so – and though $317 million isn’t much, it ain’t nothing either.

This is a huge victory for pro-life Republicans (and Democrats), and everyone who has fought against abortions for years, though the legislation still has to make it through the Senate and pass President Barack Obama’s desk. I agree that federal tax money shouldn’t be spent on abortions, it just seems a little extreme that they would cut all of these services and procedures along with the Planned Parenthood funding. But it’s a whole spending cut package, and every cent helps as the government faces a shortfall of trillions of dollars.

It is very extreme what the Republicans did. Especially when federal law already prevents tax money being used for abortions, even though abortions are legal.

I wish I could decide what I wanted my tax dollars to fund.

Tax money isn’t allowed to be used for only certain abortions, but others are definitely funded by federal dollars.

This bill would change that, and cut off all cash flow for all abortions … at least that’s how I read it.

I didn’t know about this, but it’s good to know!
I think the US is going to try to quietly cut programs at every chance they get, just so that they don’t have to admit their finances are completely out of whack and resort to austerity, like many of our European friends have…

I think I heard somewhere that pride comes before the fall!!!!
