UN Security Council

October 12, 2010 at 2:02 pm (News, Politics)

Canada lost the chance to sit on the UN Security Council for the 2011-2012 term. We were third place after the first round of secret voting, and went head-to-head against Portugal in round two, when neither country garnered the needed majority.

Canada withdrew, but a third round still went ahead as the rules require. I think it was gentlemanly of us to secede to Portugal, but it’s all quite a blow to our reputation. It’s the first time Canada has failed to gain a seat. The government has campaigned hard for this, and now they’re blaming Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff for the loss. Right.

On the upside, Colombia snagged a seat. As a pretty big fan of the South American country, I’m pumped to see them given such an important role.
