Santos for president

May 30, 2010 at 7:27 pm (Colombia)

I’m in Canada. And it’s awesome. More on that to come soon.

But Colombia is where the real action is. Today the country’s citizens went to the polls to vote for their next president. Defense minister Juan Manuel Santos and former Bogota mayor Antanas Mockus were thought to be neck-in-neck, but after most of the results have come in, Santos has about twice as many votes.

While I cannot even pretend to be an expert on Colombian politics, I have heard enough to have decided I would like to see Santos take the job from Alvaro Uribe. Even though he is the clear front-runner after today’s election, he didn’t win enough votes to avoid a run-off in June.

These are hugely important times for the South American nation. Uribe has made a lot of progress, but there is much more to be made and the next president will be the one to chose the direction that progress will take.
