Santa Claus a Canadian

Don’t you just love what our media is writing about?

“The Government of Canada wishes Santa the very best in his Christmas Eve duties and wants to let him know that, as a Canadian citizen, he has the automatic right to re-enter Canada once his trip around the world is complete,” said Jason Kenney, the minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, in an official statement.

Okay, I know it’s Christmas in two days and everything … but an official statement? On Santa’s citizenship? I would like to think out government has better things to do …

I only have one thing to say: Miracle on 34th Street (1947).

In the movie, Santa Claus was put on trial, after a Macy’s employee tried to send him to an asylum because he insisted he was the one and only Kris Kringle.
O’Hara played a tough as nails Macy’s exec (with a heart of gold of course) who refuses to believe in Santa, the Easter Bunny and other important so-called ‘made up’ holiday figures.
Santa almost gives up his fight until O’Hara has a change in heart and tells Kris she believes in him.
(I’m thinking of you in the Maureen O’Hara role.)
Eventually Santa wins his battle in court, after the U.S. Postal service sends him thousands of letters adressed to Santa Claus — meaning the federal government acknowledged him as the one and only Jolly ole’ St. Nick.
This proves that our government can play a vital role in preventing a similar legal snafu that almost landed Santa in the funny farm, simply by making an official statement acknowledging he legally exists.

If movies have taught us anything, it’s that we must stand up and defend our holiday icons when they are threatened with imprisonment or a stint at Bellview.
