Out of the loop

December 1, 2008 at 7:36 am (News, Politics) (, , )

On Thursday night I left the sunny beauty of Hawaii. This evening I drove home to Ottawa in the falling snow. I’m slowly returning to reality.

I had several wake-up calls in the course of my journey home. I feel very out of the news loop.

  • The NDP and the Liberals have formed a coalition to oust Prime Minister Stephen Harper and take control of the government. This is absolutely crazy. Canada voted for another Conservative minority. I guess that’s not good enough for Jack Layton or Stephane Dion, who planned to step down as federal party leader but now hopes to be PM in this new partnership. The one good thing is that they don’t plan to force another election – which would be total madness – but in all honesty, I don’t want either of them as Canada’s leader.
It’s disappointing that the Conservatives move to cut subsidies for federal parties based on their number of votes was just cut down instead of allowing some negotiation.

  • The NDP is considering charging the party in power for taping a secret strategy session and passing around recordings to the media. Will we ever again have elected officials that actually work together to govern this country? This is pretty low on both sides.
  • The Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai, India, was attacked last week, possibly by a Pakistani militant group. I’m still trying to piece together what happened, probably along with the rest of the world.

Well. I’m back from my vacation. The world is still turning.

Check back later this week for more photos from my trip, continued coverage of the Canadian political situation and any other randomness I decide to share with you all. I hope you didn’t miss me too much!
