John McCain announced his running mate today: Alaska governer Sarah Palin. It’s the first time a woman is a Republican party candidate for vice president. She pretty much came out of nowhere – she wasn’t on the list most suspected the VP would be chosen from – but is strongly conservative, refused an abortion when she knew her child had Down’s syndrome, and has a son about to head off to Iraq.
Barack Obama announced Senator Joe Biden as his running mate last week. He officially accepted the Democratic nomination yesterday.
Oh, and happy birthday to McCain. He turned 72 today.
