Assault claim untrue
Ottawa police investigated a claim by an teenaged girl that she was sexually assaulted yesterday. It’s the eighth reported incident of its kind in the last few months.
This one sounded especially scary - a guy with a knife attacked the girl and dragged her into the bush while she struggled. Well, it would be scary if it had actually happened.
According to a police report from this afternoon, the incident was fabricated. To me, that’s nearly as bad as if it had taken place. Girls will be scared to walk anywhere alone soon, even in the middle of the day. The paranoia these reports cause, not to mention the use of police resources and media attention, is entirely unnecessary. I can’t image why young women would make these stories up … for attention? Fame?
The problem is that sexual assaults really do happen, and it would be terrible if the police started treating the reports at all lightly because of a few false alarms.

I doubt she does it for fame, since the name is always kept private, but attention would probably be the main reason. Maybe not enough attention at home? Or a call for help of some type? Who knows.
P.S.- You’ve misspelled assault incorrectly a couple of times (including the headline). :-)
